My
Precious 10 days with Posco Beyond Global Youth Volunteer
Halo online friends, it's been so long that I
haven't updated anything here. I was
just lazy, and had no interesting contents to be posted, but today I have some,
and just too good to be missed. I am gonna share here now.
So, starting from January 20 - 30, I joined a
voluntary event called posco beyond along with other approximately 20 students
from Indonesia and 90 students from Korea. POSCO 1% Foundation and Habitat for Humanity held
the POSCO Global Youth Volunteer `Beyond` in Indonesia this
year. Beyond was jointly established
with Habitat for Humanity Korea in 2007 as one of POSCO`s social contribution
activities, which was designed for college students to strengthen their
volunteer mind, and to spread a culture of sharing.
Beyond members are called `Beyonders` with the
meaning of `Spreading a culture of sharing beyond regions to the global
community, and becoming future oriented volunteers going beyond the present.` Each
year, approximately 100 youth members have participated with great passion.

We were divided into 10 teams. I got the first team
and had to build the house number 10. I would say I got the best team ever. I
was literally surrounded by the best people and got the best exprerience in ten
days. This was such a huge opportunity
for me and I felt totally blessed to experience this with them.
All we did were building houses, visiting school,
visiting PT. Krakatau Posco , having a cultural exchange event, and most importantly to me was having fun on
our recreation/game time hahaha. I swear to God, these Koreans are so creative and never
running out of ideas in making games. Just like on a Korean tv show I used to
watch, but that day I finally got to play the game in real life, and it was
real fun. All those games really helped us to create a bond between all the
beyonders.
Before going further of telling every details of
what we did in ten days, I'm going to share my team's profiles first. Since my
main purpose to write this is to let my team members know how much I love
them. I actually feel bad for not
writing letter to each one of them on our last day when they actually wrote and
prepare a lot of gift for me huhu. They are the sweetest. I didn't have much time to write, and I
actually didn't want to write any letters in a hurry, because I want to
sincerely pour all my thoughts and feelings.
Dear my team, please just pretend that these
following texts are my letters (e-letters actually) for you. I'm generally thanking you all for sticking
with me in 10 days. Honestly, I'm
already in love with Korea and everything related to Korea, and after meeting
you guys, now my motivation to go there and pursue my dream is getting
higher. I promise I will learn Korean
more, and hope to be able to speak fluently when we meet again. My 2019 has
just started, yet I already had the best times, and I swear the only worst part
is when we were finally packing our bags and had to say goodbye.
Okay,
Let's start!
LETTERS FOR MY TEAM
1 MEMBERS
- To : uri leader dong ha!!!!
Annyeong dong ha
eonnie! Thank you for taking care of me and the team. You worked so hard, despite
you are a girl but you were very strong in mixing and stirring the cement
dough. You were also the most skilled
one in walling, you made it to the highest level when me and some of us were
sometimes messing up and just end up giving the extra job for the constructors
cause they had to re-do everything. I even gave up in walling cause I never got
it right I'm sorry kkkkk.
My
first impression on you was that I kept thinking how can you be this cute and
beautiful when you were just casually talking. But later on I realized that you
are not only that kind of cute home girl, but you are actually stronger that I
thought. I'm so grateful to have a leader like you. I'm gonna miss you. I love
you.
- To : Bu Guru Hi
Halo Seung Hui eonnie, I guess you are in charge in
making the gift for the home owner, right???
Cause you kept reminding us to write messages kkkk. Thank you for your kindness, I’m sure the
home owner really love the gift because I do too. You are such a nice person,
Thank you for taking care of me, Thank you for giving me the mosquito sticker.
Seung Hui eonnie, You are that kind of big sister I
always dream of, since I don't have any older sisters. Please be my sister. I'm gonna miss you. I
love you.
- To : Suhyeon Cantik
Hi Su eonnie, you are so so so so
so pretty and the softest girl I've ever met.
You didn't talk much but you worked hard. Thank you for taking good
pictures.
I adore you so much. I just want to tell you and
this might be a little bit embarrassing but you know what, all the boys I've
ever loved at school always end up liking a quiet and soft girl like you lol.
That's why I wonder how to be that kind of girl hahahaha. Anyway, I sincerely pray for your happiness,
I hope you will find a good man to spend the rest of your life with. You deserve all the good things in the world.
Sorry for teasing you a lot on our last day kkkkkkkkkk. I love you.
4. To : Jinah the cute hamster
Annyeong Jinah
eonnie, you might older than me but I
feel like we are chingu (friends) cause
we talk about handsome guys and music while we were working hahaha. You tried so hard to talk to me, thank you, I
appreciate that. Thank you for being a good partner in tying the wire and
walling. I also heard you are the person who was responsible for your team
performance, that's amazing jinah, let's
dance together one day. Teach me!
Jinah eonnie, please practice the claps too. I hope
to see you soon. Saranghaeyo.
- To : Minseo eonnie
Hi minseo
eonnie, it's really nice to know you and the fact that we both are majoring the
same thing in college. I wish you the best of luck, and you will be a good
teacher for kids. On our last days you
looked unexcited and I was really worried that we might do something bad that
made you sad, but thanks God you were just tired and I was happy to see your
smile back on our very last day when you got to play around with the kids in
the homeowner's neighborhood. It was nice talking to you until late. Thank you for everything, I'm gonna miss you.
Saranghaeyo. - To : Dong Chan Oppa
Annyeong Dong
Chan Oppa, I just want to say please don't be sorry for not communicating with
me that much. You already did your best
and I knew it since we finally got closer day by day. By the way Dong Chan
oppa, I guess you should know that most of my friends think you are the most
handsome guy among our team, even among
all the male beyonders. WOW *CLAPS*.
They said you have beautiful eyes. Did you remember that girl who asked
to take pictures right before we go to the hotel? She's my friend and I guess
she's one of your fan now congratulations kkkkkk. Thank you for being nice to her.
You
also funnier than I thought, You contribute a lot in making me laugh you don't
even know kkkkkkk. Thank you Chan
oppa. Together we can!
- To : Sung Been Oppa
Halo Been
Oppa, I swear you really have the best
vibes, you are funny and hilarious
without even trying to be. You are so
creative and have so many styles and poses in our team photo or in your own
photo. Another funny thing about you is when you tried to explain something to me
or Agam, but you didn't know how to say it then you just.... "anio anio" and cancelled it
kkkkkk. You looked confused and your facial expression was priceless. Your
"ya ya ya" shouts too will always be remembered.
I also want to say congratulations for the
educational program cause it ran smoothly and you got the kids' votes for being
the most handsome guy in our team, and I lowkey agree with those kids lol. it's
probably because you look like one of Indonesian celebrities. Chukkae Mr. Been. I really hope to see you soon.
- To : Andy Oppa
Hi Andy oppa, you were the one who talked a lot with me
since the very first day. You are so
cool and intelligent cause seems like you know everything about the world. Every time you praised me for my Korean, I was so so happy. You are also the main translator in our team
(beside Lucy), I didn't know what would I be without you.
I also want to say sorry about that day, for being
thoughtless and too blunt. when you played your playlist, and I casually said "not my kind of
music" to Agam, and he said
"it's Andy's" and you were standing right next to me, then you
immediately changed the songs. Hahahah I actually kept thinking about that
day, like what did I just say lmao, I actually like ballad songs too, but not in that situation cause I was working
and would feel really sleepy if I listen to sad song, that's why I said what I said.
Anyway, Thank
You so much for everything, I believe you will be a successful person, and always be someone I can look up to. Since you really like and prefer a local
place rather than a tourist common destination, next time you better come to my
place and talk with the locals here,
they would be very happy to have you here. See you soon Andy Oppa.
- To : Chang Woo Oppa
Chang Woo Oppa
Annyeong. They said you are the most talkative one in the team, but why didn't
we talk that often huhu. I really wish
we could have more interaction. But that's okay oppa, I understand cause you were really busy with
your duty preparing the fun games for all of us. You really did a great job, I
enjoyed all the games and had so much fun. Thank you again for granting my wish
to play ikon's song yet I couldn't get it right lmao I feel bad kkkkkk. Let's blame the dancer cause he ain't
gesturing the dance correctly kkkkk.
Okay joking. I was just bad at guessing.
Chang Woo oppa listen to me, next time you should
give extra score for our team, and let Dong Ha eonnie win over you kkkkkk. Arachi?!!!! Let's meet again asap.
- To : Byeong Joo Oppa
Byeong Joo Oppa
Annyeoooooooong!!!! *read this with the
cheerful tone of my voice that you could imagine*
You have no idea how grateful I am to have a staff
manager like you. I guess you shouldn't
even work that hard with us in the building site, but you did. Thank you so
much. When I felt really tired, I knew you guys (people with black vest) must
be more tired than all of us the volunteers.
When I started to think that I really need more sleep, but then I
realized you and the other staff manager slept less than all of us too. So, no
matter how tired I was, there's no way
in hell I would complain cause I knew a lot of people worked really hard to
make this event run smoothly. I
endlessly thank you for all of your hardwork. Byeong Joo Oppa please Stay
healthy and be happy!
- To : Agam
Since I write
letters for everyone I think I should write one for you too. I am thankful that
they somehow decided to choose us to be partner in one team. I really couldn't imagine if it wasn't you
and I guess things would be totally different. I was amazed and surprised on
how you know kpop better than me kkkkkk.
So from now on, I decide to call you the kpop sunbaenim since you've
been in the kpop world longer than me. I hope we will always remain as friends
even after this event ended. Let's hang out with Lucy and kak Evi too one
day.
- To : Lucy
Lusiiii
haloooo, from the moment you told me
that I should just speak informally to you,
I knew it was the best way for us to get closer and become less awkward.
I wonder how could you speak Korean that good despite you are not even majoring
it. That's amazing. Please teach me your way. Anyway, Good luck
with your study, I hope you will
graduate soon. See you on top!
- To : Kak Evi
Kak Evi, I always adore a strong and tough woman
like you. You gave us example,
supervised our work, you fixed our wrongdoings, and I'm sorry for being a lazy
constructor by asking "why don't we just use mortar to mix the
cement?" lol. you instantly answered "then what would you guys do
huh!?!" you were right hahhaha we would probably daydreaming all day long
if we have mortar.
But beside our construction work, I never thought we
both could laugh that hard over the smallest thing, I literally laughed so hard till I fell to
the ground, till I think "do I
still have stock of laughter for tomorrow?" cause I felt like I already
spent everything that day, but nah, I was wrong,
we even laughed harder the next day. Thank you so much for laughing with
me. When you said you want to wrap me
and bring me home, that was really cute and I was touched. Thank you. You don't have to wrap me up, cause I will
come to knock your door one day. Just
wait.
Okayyyyy,
that’s all, hope you guys are happy reading my letters, once again, I feel so
loved thank you.
THINGS
WE DID FOR TEN DAYS
Day 1 ( 20 January 2019)
On
our first day, I actually did nothing rather than enjoying the super good
facility at our hotel lol. I tried how to operate everything in the toilet,
turned the tv on for a whole day, visiting all my Indonesian friends’ rooms,
flopping my body onto the soft bed. What a world I live in haha. That was a
pretty good day to me. Anywayyyyy, how did I do nothing that day? Because all
the Korean volunteers were still on their way, meanwhile all the Indonesian
volunteers came earlier. I was so excited to meet them and I kept practicing my
“annyeong haseyo Yuli Imnida” over and over again. I really wanted to make a
good first impression kkkkkk I hope I did it. Before the day ended, Mr. Yohan
and Mrs. Dasom took us for dinner in Bintang Laguna Restaurant, and they
explained everything about our whole schedule for the next ten days and divided
us into teams. I got my list and so excited to meet everyone in the team. I
also got my orange tshirt.
Day 2 (21 January 2019)
We
started to fill the empty chairs in the ballroom, Mr. Yahoo the most generous
person came approaching us to say Hello. I actually didn’t know who he was, but
then I found out that he is the most important person aka the founder of this
beyond program. Thanks to him we all now had the opportunity to experience and
be the part of this amazing program. Later on, all the Korean Beyonders started to fill the room as well. I
felt nervous to meet them for the first time haha. So after everyone gathered,
time for Ms. Cherry (someone from Habitat) and Mr. Yohan to explain what would
all the beyonders do in the building site, things that should be our concerns,
safety procedure and so on. When the explanation done, they asked us all the
Indonesian beyonders to introduce ourselves. Alright, it was the time to show
my ‘annyeong haseyo’ skill kkkkkkkk. I introduced myself as the member of team
1 and was so glad everyone in the team cheered for me, kamsahamnida.
We
continued to have our lunch and got our building equipment ready. We all then
gathered in lobby, we were going to start our real work yuhuuuu. Before going to the work site, we visited the
basecamp first and listened to some people giving their speeches, but I didn’t
remember who, and whattabouts, sorry I was busy talking to my members and
following each other’s instagram accounts. After the speech, we all did
exercise together, and took pictures. Then we finally headed to our own
building site, my team got house number 10 and not so far from the basecamp. We
shortly arrived and met Lucy our LO and kak Evi our constructor. They explained
what progress we should reach each day and introducing us to our work. First
work to do was making columns by tying rings with wire to the four long irons.
That was easy yet I still wanted to throw up if I remember how many columns we
should finish. However, since we all did it together along with a blast of
music, all my tiredness were wiped away.
Day
3 (22 January 2019)
I
guess we still did the same kind of building work for the next day. so
sorry, now I am already tired to write anything hahahaha. So let me just put
pictures and short description for the next days.

Day
4 (23 January 2019)
Day
5 (24 January 2019)
Educational
Program, my team had to teach the kids how to save our forest, we also made
them read the biodiversity oath and draw our own eco bag. It was my best day so
far, even though I was exhausted and my throat sore cause I had to talk a lot
in the classroom, but seeing all the happy faces and excitement from the kids
made me extremely happy too.

we’ve done teaching yuhuuuu.

Day 6 ( 25 January 2019)
Our
schedule on the sixth day was visiting PT. Krakatau Posco, despite I live near
the location, it was my first visit ever. Once I got there, I totally got my
jaw dropped seeing how big it is. Watching the process of steel making, and
every single thing happened there always amazed me. I didn’t even know how to
describe them, but everything looked so complicated and my weak brains couldn’t relate. I guess I
should stop thinking and just enjoy the visit, I might going bald if I kept
thinking how did they start all of this.
Next
thing we did was listening to Mr. Yahoo’s speech, I was actually eager to know
what was the speech about but no one translate it for me. He basically talked
about the history of this beyond program and why he made it. At least that’s
what my friend told me. hm okay then.
still on the same day, while me and
the other Indonesian Beyonders were practicing for our performance, Mr. Yahoo
came to us to say goodbye cause he had to go back to Korea. So sad, cause he
used to give me vitamins every morning, telling me it was a secret, but turned
he gave it to everyone and told them the same hahaha.
Day 7
I
just wanted to say that works were getting harder. We were not only dealing
with the wire, but also the cement and wall. I would say putting the walls was
the hardest part, I was just probably not really good at it. By the way, I
forgot to mention that beside working, everyone also regularly practice for our
performance every night after dinner, so there’s no time to relax and watch Spongebob
for 2 hours straight. Just sleep, eat, work, and repeat.
me and erina, pic
from day 7
Day 8 (27 January 2019)
No work, just enjoyed the show! it was the day of Cultural Exchange, time for
all the Korean beyonders to perform what they have prepared. I really enjoyed
every performance from each team. Not only Korean, the event also had some
performances from Indonesia, amazing as well. All the performers that day are
really skilled dancers.
My team my team my team. Good job!
Day 9 (28 January 2019)
Since we’re about to say goodbye to
the homeowner, after working and dinner, we prepared the gift for the homeowner.
Day 9 (29 January 2019)
Work done, but I know the house
still has a long way to go, we are really sorry that we had to leave.
team 1 with the home owner
Still on the same day, when we were
back at the hotel, Indonesian beyonders performed after (last) dinner.
Untirta team performance
After
the performance from all the Indonesian beyonders, we continued to do a lot of
games, I had so much fun that night, knowing the fact that it was our last
night, I really didn’t want to end it.
Day 10 ( 30 January 2019)
So
we really had to say goodbye, I was really tired, physically and emotionally
but I still had to pack my bag, and had to meet everyone in the lobby to let
them go. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for working so hard, a lot of lesson learned through this program,
I got a precious life experience, beautiful memories that I will always cherish, and I got new friends.
